Volunteer With Us

Are you a proactive individual looking to engage in a valuable volunteer opportunity, particularly in research/project development, peer advising or coaching, and/or event planning? If so, volunteering at the VSE Career Centre may be right for you! As a member of the volunteer program, you will participate directly in planning, creating, developing, implementing and/or delivering resources for students in the Bachelor of International Economics (BIE) program.

2017/2018 Volunteer Program
The VSE Career Centre is looking for a diverse range of volunteers for the 2017/2018 team. We want to work with driven individuals who are interested in helping with the career centre’s growth, program development, peer advising/coaching, and more. With the large variety of projects to participate in, you will have the opportunity to play to your strengths as well as branch out and expand your skill set.

VSE Career Centre volunteers are expected to dedicate 6-8 hours of their time per week to assist at the centre and we work flexibly with you to accommodate your schedule. You will be provided with an orientation session, initial and ongoing training, as well as, mentorship through regular team meetings and interactions with your direct supervisors. While some of the work that volunteers take on requires the ability to take personal initiative and being able to work with minimal supervision, other types of work require a collaborative approach with other team members.

What might you be involved in?

Peer Advising and Coaching
Through peer advising and coaching, the Career Centre will offer a range of career workshops and drop-in sessions dedicated to supporting and improving the hiring potential of BIE students. If you possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, and enjoy helping others, leading these workshops and drop-in sessions may be of interest to you. We provide you with the necessary resources, tools and training to prepare you for this leadership role.

Project Development
Some of our volunteers come to us with ideas of projects they would like to lead and others get involved with our current projects. This can include developing new career workshops, events exclusive for BIE students, business development ideas, marketing, program development and much more. If you have ideas for projects that you would like to see the career Centre provide exclusively for BIE students, you will have the opportunity to be involved in every step of the development process and to watch your ideas come to life.

Content Management
As we expand the resources available to BIE students, we need skilled writers to produce high quality content for the website, support tools and documents, and other project development. If you are a critical thinker, an effective researcher and enjoy the process of developing written materials, this is where you will be able to further develop important communicative skills.

Qualifications and Benefits:
We are looking for a wide range of volunteers that have varying experience and bring their own unique set of skills and qualities to the team. In your cover letter, tell us about your experience with any of the following, as well as what you think you can bring to the Career Centre.

Some desired skills and abilities in our volunteers:

  • Ability to conduct research
  • Innovative and creative problem solving
  • Effective oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and within a team
  • Critical thinker

Why Become a Volunteer?
You will be able to develop yourself both professionally and personally while working on your own initiative to develop skills in areas that you have experience in, as well as, areas that are new to you. Unlike one-day volunteer roles, this is a commitment that will enable you to develop yourself over a longer period while potentially witnessing how your work is having a positive impact on BIE students and perhaps even becoming part of the VSE Career Centre for years to come.

Our commitment to ‘You’!

  • Ongoing training and mentorship
  • Open access to the VSE Career Centre resources and information
  • Professional and personal development opportunities
  • An open and supportive team environment
